When to See a Pediatric Dentist

Teething Problem

If teething is delayed in an infant, a dentist should be consulted to ascertain the cause and to check proper development of the teeth and jaws. Sometimes it can hamper proper speech development also.

Misaligned Teeth (Malocclusion)

If upper jaw does not align properly with lower jaw, when closed, it can cause injuries or pain while biting. Your dentist will advise on course correction.

Cavities and Tooth Decay

Cavities are the most common disease in the children and it is estimated that 50% of children have one cavity at least. Cavities are caused by poor oral hygiene, letting baby asleep with bottle in the mouth or letting your baby keep bottle in the mouth while walking around etc. Children are more prone to cavities (Dental Caries) as they tend to consume more sugar. It is required to fill the cavities in time to avoid further tooth decay and to avoid Gingivitis and dental abscesses.

Cleft Palate

A cleft palate is when a baby is born with a cleft (opening) in the palate (roof) of the mouth which leaves a hole between the mouth and the nose. Sometimes the opening in the palate can connect with an opening in the gums and the lip (cleft lip and palate). These orofacial clefts are some of the most common birth defects. Most kids can have surgery to repair them early in life.

Causes of Cleft Palate

During the first trimester of pregnancy, the bones and skin of a baby’s upper jaw, nose, and mouth normally come together (fuse) to form the roof of the mouth and the upper lip. A cleft palate happens when parts of the roof of the mouth do not fuse together completely.

Treatment

A cleft palate is repaired with surgery called Palatoplasty after the baby is 10–12 months old.
In this surgery, a plastic surgeon will close the opening in layers, rearrange the muscles of palate, make incisions to reduce tensions on palate surgery. The surgery requires general anesthesia and hospitalization for 2-3 days.
